Random thoughts from a random person…

Why…

is it that people speak louder or yell at someone who doesn’t understand or speaks very little English? We see people from cruise ships in our office, not all of them are American so their English is limited. I hear people ask them questions and when they indicate that they don’t understand, these brilliant people repeat the question twice as loud. Why? The person is not deaf, they don’t speak the language, therefore, you can shout it as loud as you want and it will not make a difference. Okay yes it will, the person will just be thinking that you are a complete idiot because they heard you just fine the first time, they just didn’t understand.

The same can be said for older people, just because they are older doesn’t mean they are deaf. Have you ever noticed that younger people speak louder when talking to an older person right from the get go? Start with your inside voice, and if they have problems hearing you, then raise your voice a level, but don’t shout from the minute you encounter them. This just makes you look like a complete ass.

While I am on my soap box, when you speak to me or speak to a person in a business setting, speak properly. Don’t speak to me or a person patronizing your business like you would speak to your child or your friends at the club. Also, don’t speak to them like they are bothering you or with an attitude. I understand you may not have gone to college, but damn we all had English and grammar in school. Slang is not an acceptable form of communication in a business setting.

Oh and your personal phone call or the conversation you are having with your co-worker is not the priority. The customer standing in front of you is. They are paying you for a service, they don’t give a rat’s ass if your baby daddy is sleeping with a skank ho who looks a hot mess.

I could go on, but you get the point. Do your job  and be professional about it. I don’t care if you work at McDonald’s or the White House, show some pride in yourself and what you do. You don’t have to have a college degree to do well in life, you just need a little bit of common sense and a good work ethic. Your job is a privilege, not a right.
